MARYLAND SUMMER: THREE SMALL EVENING POEMS

I.

Trees in silhouette

Against a sooty grim sky:

Their leaves are near black

But still, in between each branch

They let in the light.

II.

July fog descends,

A hazy grey barrier:

Hidden within it,

The promise of December

To my weary heart.

III.

In the fairy gulch

The fireflies are dancing,

Green-gold and laughing:

They know the secret places

Where you and I can’t enter.
